Meet Nico
Canyon Critters was founded by Nicola “Nico” Novelli. He created it to teach proper and responsible reptile ownership. He also wanted to support the rescued and abandoned animals he has taken in. What began as a personal commitment has grown into a living classroom. At shows, parties, and community events, curiosity and respect meet hands-on learning.
Nico first started taking in rescues while working for L.A. County Animal Control. Some animals faced euthanasia. He chose a different path and gave them a second chance. That decision shaped his career. It also shaped the mission behind Canyon Critters. Every rescue he welcomes strengthens his belief. Education and compassion can change how people see reptiles and other wildlife.
His love of animals started long before Animal Control. As young as six, Nico brought home all kinds of creatures. He wanted to help and care for them. That early instinct never faded. For more than 30 years he has owned and handled many animals. Snakes have always been a special focus. That work built the skill, patience, and confidence he brings to every show.
Nico also had the privilege of working for Jules Sylvester, owner of Reptile Rentals. Reptile Rentals supplies reptiles to the entertainment industry. Its credits include Indiana Jones, Arachnophobia, Lemony Snicket, and Snakes on a Plane. While with Reptile Rentals and Animal Actors, Nico helped care for and train many kinds of animals. He learned how to keep them healthy and calm. He also learned how to prepare them for film and live work.
In addition, Nico lived and worked at a wolf rescue. Some of the wolves in Canyon Critters wolf shows came from there. That experience deepened his respect for wild animals. It also taught him the responsibility of sharing them with the public.
Nico has dedicated most of his life to animal care and welfare. Through Canyon Critters, he continues that work. He teaches responsible ownership. He gives rescued animals a voice. And he invites every audience to meet these remarkable creatures with wonder and respect.
